If You Feel Constantly Stressed & Distracted, It’s Not Your Fault
In the twenty-first century, two very powerful forces compete for every minute of your time: we call them the Busy Bandwagon and Infinity Pools.
Busy Bandwagon
The Busy Bandwagon is our culture of constant busyness—the overflowing inboxes, stuffed calendars, and endless to-do lists.
Infinity Pools
Infinity Pools are apps and other sources of endlessly replenishing content. This always-available, always-new entertainment is your reward for the exhaustion of constant busyness.
Both forces are powerful because they not only compete for our attention, they’ve become the default for how we spend our time.
Most of Our Time is Spent by Default
Just like our phones come with “default” settings, there are also defaults in our workplaces and culture that make being busy and distracted the norm. These “defaults” are everywhere so most of us just accept them without even thinking about it.
Nobody wakes up and says, “I want to spend 4 hours today scrolling through my phone” but because of the default settings, this is what the average smartphone user does. But what if you could override these defaults and create your own?
That’s where Make Time comes in.
A Simple Framework For More Focused & Meaningful Days
Make Time is not about crushing your to-do list, optimizing every hour, or maximizing personal productivity. It’s not macho, hardcore, or a “one-size-fits-all” plan. We’ve tried plenty of those, and while we did get more done, we didn’t like how it made us feel. Make Time is about rethinking the defaults of constant busyness and distraction so you can focus on what matters every day.
Here’s how it works:
Highlight: Start each day by choosing a priority
This simple step ensures you spend time on what matters most to you and don’t spend the entire day reacting to other people’s priorities.
Laser: Beat distraction to make time
Distractions like email, social media, and breaking news are everywhere. We’ll show you how to adjust your devices and apps so you can find Laser mode.
Energize: Use the body to recharge the brain
Today’s typical lifestyle ignores our evolutionary history; we’ll show you how to reset the defaults so you can power up.
Reflect: Adjust and improve your system
At the end of each day, you’ll note which tactics worked, which didn’t, and what you’ll try tomorrow (refine, add, or drop).

Hi, we’re Jake & JZ, Creators of Make Time
Hi, we’re Jake and JZ. Most time-management advice is written by or about superhumans. But we’re normal, fallible human beings who get stressed out and distracted just like everyone else.
After working in the tech industry for a long time, we felt burned out by the always-connected culture and back-to-back meeting schedule that left little time for our priorities.
So we decided to do something about it.
We took what we learned from designing apps like Gmail and YouTube, and came up with simple ways to fight distraction and take back control.
We experimented, failed, and succeeded, and, over time, learned that it’s possible to redesign your time—to get more focus, greater attention, and better energy for the things that matter to you every day.
In the book, we share everything we learned, along with many tales of our human errors and dorky solutions in the hopes that they inspire you to start your own Make Time journey.
