Notice one breath

by nicktekavic

Hey Time Dorks,

This week I’m going to introduce you to one important tactic you can do to become more mindful and help you get back to focusing on what matters.

The best news? It takes under a minute.

Something to Try

When you lose focus in your day, you don’t have to completely throw in the towel.

There’s a way you can bring your focus back to what matters most without having to develop a whole, extensive mindfulness practice.

We call this tactic Notice One Breath (#56).

That’s right. Just notice one breath.

Breathe in through your nose.

Notice the air filling up your chest.

Breathe out through your mouth.

Notice your body softening.

You’re welcome to keep noticing a few more breaths, but just one breath can be enough to reset your attention.

When you stop to notice how your body feels, it can shut down the noise in your brain.

That’s enough of a reset to bring your full attention back to your Highlight, which is really the goal here.

This works because when we are stressed, unfocused, or overwhelmed, we are often spending too much time thinking.

We forget how helpful it is to get out of our brains and practice some mindfulness.

So, the next time you feel the mental monkeys taking over, notice one breath. Bring your attention back to what matters.

As you use this tactic, you’ll find you can do it for other things, too.

Enjoy that one singular bite of food.

Enjoy the sun on your face and how it makes your body feel.

The little moments can help you recenter and get you focused again. It just starts with one breath.

Tech & Tools

If you’re keen to dive a little deeper with the breath, I’ve been loving the Othership app. Whether you’re looking for a way to unwind or an energy boost, they offer a variety of practices.

Here is a 3-minute “Energy Booster for Productivity” practice available for free on their YouTube.
