It’s time to get off the to-do list treadmill

by nicktekavic

Hey Time Dorks,

Are you constantly looking at your To-Do list and feeling overwhelmed? You are not alone! You prioritize, you time block, but no matter what you do, that list is never finished.

What if you shifted from a To-Do list to a Might-Do list?

Something to Try

We all fall victim to making a to-do list that’s insanely long and then are shocked when we don’t have the ability to finish it in a day.

To-do lists are like treadmills: they are never empty because there is always something we can do. So if you are only working directly from your lengthy to-do list, you will constantly feel overwhelmed.

Instead of continuing to frustrate yourself, try making a Might-Do (#5) list.

Spend the time making a list of all the things you might do. It’s a master list of all the possibilities.

The real secret comes from looking at your Might-Do list, pulling out your Highlight for the day, and putting it into your calendar.

When you do this, you’re making a thoughtful decision about how you should spend your time.

Don’t forget to use the main Highlight framework–urgency, satisfaction, and joy–in order to pick the one that matters most.

Because when you filter out the important tasks instead of frittering away at the easy stuff, you will start to make real progress in your life toward what matters most. You can put your full energy into the task at hand, knowing that you were thoughtful about what you’re going to take on your plate.

If you want to finish your day knowing you were intentional and focused, this is the secret to giving yourself a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Tech & Tools

Todoist and Things are popular To-Do List software apps. We personally use Notion.

The tool matters a lot less than the principle of writing things down someplace, and not living your life strapped to a To-Do List.
